Theresa, a long-time Lafayette resident with a background in the medical field, never imagined she'd be on the receiving end of community support. Her connection with Meals on Wheels began nearly a decade ago, not for herself, but for her aging parents. She remembers how comforting it was knowing that caring volunteers were checking in on them daily, making sure they had meals and even contacting her if anything seemed wrong. “It was such a relief,” Theresa recalls. “I couldn’t have asked for better care for my parents.” Little did she know that years later, she would find herself in need of the same compassionate service.
After suffering a debilitating injury, Theresa found herself in a position she never imagined—unable to cook or even leave her home in the middle of a harsh winter. “The medical system didn’t provide me with any resources for how I could take care of myself after my injury. That’s when I remembered Meals on Wheels.” The relief she felt when she called to sign up is still vivid. “I remember crying after I hung up because I was so relieved. The sign-up process was so simple, and they started delivering meals right away.”
For Theresa, Meals on Wheels became more than just a meal delivery service. It became a lifeline, offering not only nourishment but also emotional and mental support. "I was terrified to go out in the snow with my crutches. Just knowing someone would come to my door every day took away that sense of isolation. It was mentally comforting and a huge part of my recovery. And when you feel supported in your basic needs, I think you heal quicker."
The care extended beyond just meals. Theresa found herself embraced by a network of support that touched every aspect of her life. Through the Plates for Pets Program, her beloved cat Blackie receives the specialized food he needs. “To have Meals on Wheels support my pet, who is also playing a role in my recovery, is amazing.” She also participates in our Book Club, which provides her with a new book each month, giving her something to look forward to during her recovery. And through the Buddy Program, she found an unexpected friendship that blossomed over shared interests, hour-long phone calls, and connecting conversations on her front porch. "Meals on Wheels isn't just delivering meals," Theresa emphasizes. "They're delivering support, kindness, and connection. I hope more people will learn about this amazing service."
As Theresa continues her journey of recovery, she dreams of the day when she can give back. "Once I'm able, I see myself volunteering to deliver meals myself," she says, her voice filled with determination and gratitude.
